ES-TRIN, Annex 8 (3.1.1.7) - Fire protection requirements for fuel cell spaces

Question:

From a fire protection perspective, does the following apply:
- are all spaces in which fuel cell system components are installed to be regarded as engine rooms, and
- are all spaces housing only purely electrical components of a fuel cell system, or their monitoring equipment, to be regarded as electrical service rooms?

Answer:

No, that is not an accurate statement. Partitions on board passenger vessels should be classified as follows:
- fuel cell spaces should be considered as rooms of major fire risk, and
- spaces housing only purely electrical components of a fuel cell system should be considered as rooms of moderate fire risk.

Irrespective of the risk assessment referred to in Article 30.04, these spaces may not be allocated to a lower fire risk category.

For all other craft, the partitions of fuel cell spaces must be made of steel or another equivalent non-combustible material. Regardless of the risk assessment under Article 30.04, these spaces must not be constructed of materials offering a lower level of fire protection.
