ES-TRIN, Articles 1.01(3.1), (3.2) and (3.4), and 19.11 - Electrical service room
Question:
ES-TRIN 2025 provides the following definitions:
“3.1 ‘main engine room’: space where the propulsion engines are installed;
3.2 ‘engine room’: space where combustion engines are installed;
3.4 ‘electrical service room’ a room in which components of an electric propulsion system such as control cabinets or electric engines are located, and which is not an engine room;“
How should a room containing electric engine for the vessel's propulsion system be classified? With reference to ES-TRIN, Article 19.11, which fire protection requirements are applicable?
Answer:
If the room contains only an electric engine for the vessel's propulsion system, it is considered as an electrical service room and classified as a "room of moderate fire risk."
If the room contains an electric engine for the vessel's propulsion system but also internal combustion engines, it is considered as an engine room and classified as a "room of major fire risk."
