ES-TRIN, Chapter 9 - Use of FAME blends in type-approved engines CCNR I or CCNR II

Question:

What restrictions apply to the use of FAME blends in type-approved engines CCNR I or CCNR II?

Answer:

• There is no legal basis for restrictions on the use of FAME blends that can be deducted from the type-approval of CCNR I and CCNR II engines.

• Considering the research work showing risks of increased NOx emissions, and to prevent possible technical issues, shipowners must carefully observe the engine manufacturers instructions and conditions of use for FAME blends.

• New emission measurements are not required unless the parameters, components and adjustable features no longer comply with the type approval certificate and the engine manufacturer's instructions (ES-TRIN, Article 9.05).

• The End User must exclusively utilise fuels that conform to the specifications and operational guidelines provided by the Engine Manufacturer. The use of any fuel not expressly approved or recommended by the Engine Manufacturer will result in the immediate termination of all warranty coverage, including, but not limited to, coverage for emission-related components and systems. The End User assumes full responsibility for any damage, performance degradation, or increased emissions, arising from the use of fuels not approved or recommended by the Engine Manufacturer.
