ES-TRIN, 7.07(1) - VHF radio installation

Question:

Article 7.07(1) prescribes that send/receive shall be selected by means of a push-button. Should these push-buttons be operated by hand or foot?

Answer:

It should be made sure that the VHF can be operated even if the controls of the engine and the steering system need to be operated at the same time. This means that in case there is a combined control of engine speed and thrust/rudder direction which can be operated with one hand (e.g. rudder propeller), a hand-operated push button would be acceptable, whereas if the controls are separate (or in the case of multiple propulsion units) a foot-operated push button would be necessary.
